Allied Health

Cardiovascular Technologist (Echocardiographer)—Regional Wage $20-$35/hr.

  • Cardiovascular Technology program teaches students to perform diagnostic medical ultrasounds of the heart and vascular system.
  • May be employed in physicians’ offices, diagnostic imaging facilities, or hospitals.
  • Two year program.
  • Considered an in-demand occupation.
  • Prepares students to take the national board exams from ARDMS or CCI.

  • Works with patients who require assistance so that normal breathing and heart lung functions will be restored.
  • Employment opportunities: Hospitals, adult, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, outpatient home care, and diagnostic labs.
  • Two-year, 5-semester program prepares students to sit for national RRT test.
  • Little or no cost depending on location.

Pharmacy Technician—Regional Wage $10-13/hr.

  • Prepare and dispense medications, provide information about medicines to healthcare professionals and patients, and manage and control distribution.
  • In less than one year, students will be trained to sit for licensing test.

Emergency Medical Technician/Basic—Regional Wage: $12-15/hour

  • Provide emergency pre-hospital medical care. Drive an ambulance, assess nature of illness or injury, and stabilize and transport patient.
  • 4-month course prepares students to sit for state exam.
  • Must meet minimum Work Keys score or appropriate levels in English and reading on COMPASS or college credits.

Surgical Technology—Regional Wage $10-14/hr.

  • Prepare the operating room, assist with patient care, and provide a safe environment before, during and after procedures.
  • 14-month program prepares students to sit for national certification.

Medical Assistant-Regional Wage $23,700-$33,050/yr.

  • Employment is considered to grow much faster than average ranking Medical Assistants among the fastest growing occupations in healthcare.
  • Job prospects should be excellent.
  • About 62% of the MA’s work in offices of physicians’ offices.
  • Most MA’s complete 1-2 year programs at a Technical or Community College and earn a certificate or diploma. Courses usually cover a diverse array of subject matter including; anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, keyboarding, transcription, record keeping, accounting, and insurance processing for example.
  • MA’s are qualified to assist at the clerical and administration level in doctor’s offices and clinics as well as in direct patient care.

  • Perform cell counts and urinalyses.
  • Draw blood samples and perform tests.
  • Two-year AA program.
  • Work in hospitals, clinics, labs, physician offices, pharmaceutical companies and research institutions.

Medical Technologist —Regional Wage $21/hr.

  • Works in all areas of the clinical laboratory including blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology.
  • Performs a full range of lab tests to uncover diseases such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes and cancer.
  • Requires a four-year baccalaureate degree and completion of a certified medical technologist program.
  • Job opportunities available in hospitals, independent laboratories, clinics and public health facilities.

Physical Therapy Assistant —Regional Wage: $38,900/year

  • 71% of jobs are in physical therapist offices or hospitals.
  • Helps Physical Therapists provide treatment that improves patients' mobility.
  • Therapy may include exercise, massage, electric stimulation, paraffin baths, hot and cold packs, traction and ultrasound.
  • A PTA Associate of Applied Science degree can be obtained in three semesters at Delgado Community College.

Radiology Technician—Regional Wage $20/hr.

  • Takes x-rays and administers non-radioactive materials into patients' bloodstreams.
  • Prepares patients for procedures, keeps patient records and operates equipment.
  • Primarily employed in hospitals; some jobs available in physicians' offices and diagnostic imaging centers.
  • Can receive certification in other modalities such as CT, MR (Magnetic Resonance), mammography and ultrasound. Regional wages for specialities range from $32-$36 per hour.

  • Two years of education and training to enter the occupation as a technician.
  • Perform many of the same duties that a nurse performs for a physician; record case histories, treat and diagnose medical conditions and diseases, care for small pets.
  • Overall job opportunities are excellent as employment grows faster than average.

  • Typically obtains a Master's Degree from an accredited physical therapy program.
  • 6 out of 10 therapists work in hospitals or physical therapists' offices.
  • Assists patients in restoring function, improving mobility, relieving pain, and preventing or limiting permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injury or disease.
